What is an archeological site that simply must be visited at least once in one's life?

That would be a matter of opinion. There are plenty of contenders.

For me, Pompeii was the most interesting by a small margin for what I learned on two visits to the site. The Romans were more advanced than I had thought. There was a villa with an atrium that had a sprinkler system that still worked. Water piped to the second floor. A wine bar and how it functioned. Artwork on most interior walls explained a lot as it gave some insight into Roman tastes.

I was fascinated on both trips and did not see nearly as much as I would have liked.
