How do you figure out whether or not a hotel is in a safe location when you're booking a stay in an unfamiliar city?

When planning a trip, I always consulted the State Department’s web site to determine the safety and/or problems associated with wherever I planned to visit. They have detailed up to date reports for anywhere you plan to go.

For the U.S., I would look up the crime statistics for the city, and supplement that with other information about the city.

Just do research on the web before booking. It can prevent a lot of problems.
